midday. we're following up on breaking news this morning, surrounding two shootings in downtown minneapolis. police say 6 people were hurt in those shootings, both of which were likely gang related. they're also looking at whether the incidents are related. officers on the scene arrested one person. the first shooting happened around 1 a-m outside of a police station. two men were shot and are expecte block away, three men and a male teenager were shot. one of the victims is hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his chest. new at midday... cancer drug developer merrimack pharmaceutic als is cutting 22 percent of its workforce. they made the big announcement this morning. the company is also looking for a new c-e-o... as it works to eliminate 200 million dollars in cuts. the company didn't say how many people work for

this year shows it had 426 full time employees. they say this will not affect the launch of its new pancreatic cancer therapy drug. there's a deal to combine outdoor companies bass pro and cabela's. bass pro would pay cabela's shareholders 65 and a half dollars in a 4 point 4 billion dollar deal. but this deal creates uncertainty about jobs, and it's not clear how many jobs might be lost. this week the american red cross is opening people impacted by flooding in eastern iowa. a center in vinton at benton county emergency management is open from 11 a-m to 8 p-m today. workers there have clean-up kits. they include shovels, rakes, bleach, mops and more. officials are also on hand to help with paperwork needed for flood recovery. the red cross will open two more centers. tuesday and wednesday they'll be in cedar falls, and thursday

troopers say it happened while the man walked on highway 218, just south of interstate 80, around 9 last night. all three vehicles were driving north. investigators have not released the name of the person killed, pending the notification of family. they have also not said why the man was walking on the busy highway. none of the drivers sustained injuries. in cedar falls, this man is charged with operating while intoxicated after police say he hit a pedestrian. this is the first offense for mc cedar falls police say kelly struck 24 year old tristin selby just before 2 saturday morning. it happened in the area of highway 57 and roosevelt street. selby is in critical condition at the university of iowa hospitals and clinics. right now iowa city police are looking for a man who cut someone with a large knife. a man told officers someone approached him and his friends near iowa avenue and dodge street around 2:30 yesterday morning.

expected to be okay. police say the suspect is a white man between 20 and 30 years old. he has a dark beard, and was wearing a white t-shirt with dark shorts. two people in allamakee county face meth-related charges this morning following a narcotics investigation. the allamakee county sheriff's office made the arrests after executing two search warrants in lansing yesterday. authorities arrested 53 year-old amy downing of lansing for possession methamphetamine. that's after investigators found items used with illegal narcotics in a home at 211 valley street. during a traffic stop, authorities also arrested 56 year-old richard aswegan junior of west union. he is also charged with possession of a controlled substance. both are being held in the allamakee county jail. whenever you see news, call us on our newsline 9. the number is 319-365-9999. you can also send pictures and video to newsroom at kcrg

on kcrg-tv9. new this midday... today governor terry branstad announced he will lead a trade mission to china and japan. he'll be joined by members of iowa's pork and beef industries when they head overseas next month. last year, iowa companies exported more than 2 billion dollars in good to both countries. and today at one, branstad will sign the "step it up" initiative. it's aimed at making the state of iowa healthier. it asks people to walk 30 minutes a day. it also sets up the healthiest state annual walk o it's been around 100 days since people voted to have britain leave the european union. so what's been the impact on businesses since then? we'll hear from two different business owners about the experiences they've had in our next half hour. up next, we put the five second rule to the test. find out whether scientists say this is a good rule to live by... or not. meteorologist justin gehrts updates our temperatures coming up in your

report, i'm david geiger. ---- the u-s-d-a's quarterly grain stocks report.. is out.. and old crop corn and beans are up from projections.. slightly.. stocks reports like this help out farmers and market speculators by telling them how much corn.. wheat.. and beans there are in the country.. don roose with u-s commodities says it lets you know the exact amounts as of september 1.. "it tells you what kind of reserve we have to start at the end of the year, before we star the next year. what kind of a cushion we have to work wi our supply." on the numbers side.. old crop corn.. is at one point seven four billion bushels.. up a bit from last year.. of that.. on farm storage is up six percent.. at 627 million bushels.. old crop soybeans are up three percent at one hundred 97 million bushels.. june to august disappearance is up.. that means residual or unaccounted for demand.. so that's up about two hundred 50 million bushels.. soybean stocks on farms are down about 16 percent from last year.. at 41 point six million bushels.. that's given a nice little push to the grains.. just before the market close friday.. the farm economy is still weakening.. the federal reserve bank of kansas city reports the

things are getting back to normal for people after flooding. that includes sandbag drop off sites as well as the return of normal services. that includes the linn county-cedar rapids solid waste agency. garbage and recycling collections are back to normal today for people who were inside that flood evacuation zone. people who live there can put out their normal trash container as well as two 35-gallon bags for free. there are still two sandbag drop-off sites ellis park near the tennis courts and the other is in the noelridge pool parking lot. if you can't drop off your sandbags, the city will collect them, starting monday, october 10th. in other news... the university of iowa released a crime alert this weekend for a sexual assault. university police say sometime overnight last friday, september 30th, a person was assaulted by an acquaintance at an east side dorm. this is the second such report on campus so far this year. the linn county sheriff's

investigating a fatal crash between a train and pick up truck. it happened around 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the intersection arabian road and the canadian national railroad tracks. that just south of alburnett. the sheriff's office says a 44-year-old man from marion was driving a ford pickup, towing a flatbed trailer, when he drove in front of the train. the truck caught on fire during the collision. the marion man died at the scene. they haven't released his name. no railway crew members were injured in the crash police in keokuk are looking into a shooting that left a woman dead. officers found 29 year old carissa rivers unresponsive shortly after midnight sunday. she was in an alley near 10th street and north 5th street. rivers died at the hospital. police have not identified a suspect in the shooting, but say the public is not in danger. just hours after being honored at saturday's cyclone football game, police arrested former running back troy davis on suspicion of public intoxication. iowa state

a sobriety test when officers contacted him around 2:30 on sunday morning. the 45-year-old was held in the story county jail on a 300 dollar bond. davis played for the cyclones in the mid-1990's. he was a finalist for college football's top award, the heisman trophy, in 1996. isu brought davis back to campus on saturday to honor him for being inducted into the college football hall of fame. the number is 319-365-9999. send us some pictures and video too. the email address-- newsroom at kcrg dot com. alliant energy is apologizing to its customers. it comes after people saw higher than expected bills in the last week. alliant says the bills are accurate, because this summer was hotter than usual, and customers used more energy than normal. alliant also said a new billing system sent a lot of estimated bills to customers,

typically, the company contacts users when that happens, but alliant says it didn't have the enough employees to do so. the company says it will help customers come up with payment plans. it'll also waive late fees for affected users. in black hawk county, dozens of people learned what it takes to manage and produce crops. organizers held a "farm crawl" at beck's orchard. the family has 55 apple trees and about a dozen goats. the owner, louis beck, taught kids how to make apple then placed it in a press. beck says often times people, especially kids, are surprised by the work that goes into prepping food. "i think for them to see you have to take apples and make it into pulp and squeeze them and actually see the juice coming run out into the pitcher and to learn this is how you get juice is from real raw fruit " and just a few miles away at fitkin farms, people

types of corn. the farm there typically grows traditional corn and soybeans. the owner, jim fitkin, says he just started started growing popcorn in the last couple years, after a drop in field corn prices. explosion. take a look at this. this happened yesterday during the balloon fiesta in albuquerque. authorities say a man and woman were inside the basket when it happened. a woman was shocked in the incident and taken to the hospital, but there's no word on her injuries. the power company reported power outages throughout the area afterwards, as crews worked to replace some of the lines. 100 days ago voters chose to have britain leave the european union. out a plan this weekend, saying it could happen in 2019. with the vote, many businesses worried what would happen. and while some say they've been hurt, others say their business is booming. " you can buy all the machines in the world but if you don't have dedicated skill employees, it's worthless." employees comes from about 115 of them who work for m- m-p between three different shifts. "the customer will have an idea and, as far as making it manufacturable, that's where we come in." it's the precision of some of these final products that combines the engineering, math, physics and some efficiency mixed it. for aerospace, those products work around instrumentati on, gauges, search & navigation systems and storage. " we have hundreds of tools and if it's something we don't have, that's where the laser comes in. it's really high tolerance with the aerospace so we're looking at 5000th tolerance on a lot of things. it's very tight."
